Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
