Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
