Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
