Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
