Be cunning, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
