Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
