Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
