Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
