Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
