Be clever, play cunning, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
