Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
