Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
