Be clever, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
