Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
