Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
