Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
