Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
