Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
