Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
