Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
