Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
