Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
