Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
