Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
