Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
