Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
