Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
