Be clever, play clever, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
