Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
