Be cunning, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
