Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
