Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
