Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
