Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
