Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
