Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose.
