Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps.
