Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
