Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
