Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
