Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
